RAMANATHAPURAM: The Coast Guard on Thursday apprehended six Sri Lankan fishermen and seized a boat for straying into the Indian waters near Nagapattinam.

Sources said the boat was spotted by a patrolling ship about 50 nautical miles off Nagapattinam.

The fishermen claimed they were from Matharai district in Sri Lanka. Enquiries revealed they had ventured into the sea on February 20. They claimed that the boat had drifted into Indian waters owing to engine fault.

The Coast Guard confiscated 700 kg of fish.

The fishermen were brought to Mandapam and handed over to the police.
